About

The concept

Conceived and curated by Bartolomeo Pietromarchi Art on Cards is an evolving project that invites internationally renowned artists to create a deck of cards based on their practice and their work. Each deck becomes a portable, interactive work — meant to be used, played, contemplated, or collected.

The deck

Each deck is developed through a direct dialogue with a single artist. Images and words emerge from the artist’s visual language and inner vocabulary: visions, concepts, symbols, memories, and fragments of thought that allow each deck to become an entry point into their world. Art on Cards is conceived as an ongoing series of artist-designed decks, each created in collaboration with one of the most significant artists of our time.

Inspiration

Art on Cards takes inspiration from the idea of the portable museum — a concept first embodied in Marcel Duchamp's La boîte en valise, which transformed the notion of how art could be collected, experienced, and carried.

Use and rules

Rooted in Wittgenstein’s theory of visual and language games, Art on Cards treats meaning as fluid, relational, and open-ended.  Players are invited to combine images and words, creating unexpected narratives, personal associations, and new ways of entering the artist’s world.

Events

Art on Cards comes alive through playing sessions, workshops, and live events hosted in museums, schools, universities, foundations, galleries, and social venues. Each session becomes a shared space where art is not only observed, but activated through play, conversation, and collective interpretation.
The format is flexible, inclusive, and highly engaging: from intimate tables to larger public programs and community events.

Education and partnership

The project is developing collaborations with schools, universities, museums, and education departments including  Contemporary Art Museum such as MAXXI, Castello di Rivoli and art institutions and universities such as LUISS Master of Art, EDI Global Forum, Accademia Carrara, ARTis Contemporary Art Festival, but also with social clubs and social venues as Casa Tua, New York and Tuxedo, Turin.

Art on Cards / Magonza
