Change

An image of change as a departure…

CHANGE

To bend, to curve, to turn around: the meanings of the Greek verb kàmptein suggest an image of change as a departure, a turning away from a course already charted. At the centre of the image, something burns. Matter is consumed and transfigured, surrendering to ash what once seemed stable, essential, an indispensable part of the self. Every new form passes through this uncertainty: leaving behind who we have been without yet knowing who we will become. The fire, held within a boat, carries this tension onto the water: we can be on a journey while something within us is still burning. To change, then, means to set sail, to accept that our course will take shape during the crossing, to seek a balance that can embrace who we will become. Until, at dawn or dusk, we find once more the stillness needed to hear the murmur of birds.
